The mission of the InnerFit Trust is centered on the development of character foundations in kids enabling them to make good choices in life and achieve their potential. In short the development of well-rounded individuals who will become great citizens.


Designed to align with the Maori philosophy of Hauora which is the underpinning of the HPE curriculum.

Summarised below are the key outtakes and thinking that has distilled down as a result of the Teacher’s advisory group held in September 2019.


The Brief Summary

The InnerFit approach must become an enabler providing understanding and resources that allow for the integration of character development throughout all learning.

Start with support in the classroom by providing simplified resources that can be used the next day.

Focus on helping school leadership to understand the value of character development to a child's academic achievement and their life course outcomes. 

Provision of support for school leadership to maintain the focus on this long term.


Specific Items for consideration 

  • Integrate character conversations throughout learning rather than adding another thing to do. 

  • Add character resources for subjects taught in the classroom where a teacher spends 90% of their day. 

  • Drop the CJK brand and encourage schools to remain with their branding of values and character.

  • In addition to the values & character words provide resources that address current issues such as bullying!

  • Provide a range of optional implementation packages with PLD to suit.

  • Any PLD should provide teachers with tools they can use the next day.

  • Simplify Game Play templates to a one-page overview.

  • Character & Values templates could just be a few exemplars for each subject type with PLD instruction on how to use and develop their own. 

  • BT's and less experienced teachers may require a different level of PLD to get them started with a few more templates to choose from.

  • Consider providing a toolkit of generic strategies that can be used regardless of the character word focus.

  • Focus on the importance and benefits of establishing class values.
